Hi! My name is Ashley and I am a very athletic 26 year old female from North Jersey. I invite you to read along while I recover from a recent double hip surgery!
In the summer of 2011, I was about to celebrate my 5 year anniversary of Kardio Kickboxing at a wonderful Tae Kwon Do facility in North Jersey. However, after a serious roundhouse kick to the air to prove my strength, something deep in my pelvic area tore. As time went on, I saw 3 orthopedic doctors in New Jersey who told me that I probably had a pulled muscle or nerve damage. They all sent me for their own x-rays and with nothing showing up, they all suggested I discontinue kickboxing and stop running forever.
Being an extremely active individual, I freaked out. However, I tried to listen to my doctor's. I quit kickboxing, decreased milage in running and began physical therapy with Dr. Jim O'Rourke at Focus Physical Therapy. By November, I was feeling almost 100% better and was even able to run 4 miles a few times a week again!
However, at the end of March 2012, I fell out of a handstand during a yoga practice, and all the pain came back... but worse!
I finally convinced one of the 3 orthopedic doctors to write a prescription for an MRI with die contrast to see if my labrum was torn. Unfortunately, it was. I received a recommendation from Dr. Jim O'Rouke to make an appointment with Dr. Struan Coleman at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.
After 2 consultation appointments, more x-rays and a second MRI of my left hip, Dr. Coleman found out that I had labral tears in BOTH of my hips because of impingements. On July 18, 2012 I finally scheduled my DOUBLE hip surgery for August 21, 2012!
